Titanium dioxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula TiO2, and its appearance is white powder. It is non-toxic, best opacity, best whiteness and brilliance. TiO2 has many excellent properties, such as photocatalysis, semi-permanence, hydrophilicity, acid and alkali resistance, responsiveness to different visible light, weather resistance, and oxidation resistance. So titanium dioxide powder is widely used in plastics, coatings, paper, printing ink, chemical fiber, rubber, cosmetics and other industries. As an important white pigment and porcelain glaze, the amount of titanium dioxide accounts for more than 80% of all white pigments.

TiO2 titanium dioxide has two main structures: titanium dioxide rutile (R type) and titanium dioxide anatase (A type). And TiO2 rutile grade has a compact structure, is relatively stable, and has low optical activity, so it has good weather resistance. At the same time, titanium dioxide rutile has high hiding power and color reduction power, so it has better application performance. While TiO2 anatase grade is an important nanomaterial, which has attracted much attention because of its broad application prospects. It is a titanium dioxide with a sharp-edged structure and has many excellent properties, such as photocatalytic effect, microbicidal effect, weather resistance and anti-aging, etc.

Main Uses of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)

As a powerful material, the excellent properties of titanium dioxide make it widely used in many fields, such as coatings, plastics, paper making, printing ink, chemical fiber, rubber, cosmetics and other industries. The following is the detailed introduction of its applications:

Paint Industry. The titanium dioxide has the characteristics of bright colors, high hiding power, strong tinting power, less dosage, and many varieties. In addition, TiO2 powder can protect the physical stability of the medium, and can enhance the mechanical strength and adhesion of the paint film, prevent cracking, prevent ultraviolet rays and moisture penetration, and prolong the life of the paint film.

Plastic Industry. Adding titanium dioxide powder can improve the heat resistance, light resistance and weather resistance of plastic products, improve the physical and chemical properties of plastic products, enhance the mechanical strength of products, and prolong the service life.

Paper Making Industry. TiO2 titanium dioxide can make the paper have good whiteness, good gloss, high strength, thin and smooth, no penetration when printing, and light weight. The titanium dioxide for papermaking generally uses anatase titanium dioxide without surface treatment, which can act as a fluorescent whitening agent and increase the whiteness of paper.

Ink Industry. The ink containing titanium dioxide is durable and does not change color, has good surface wettability and is easy to disperse. And the itanium dioxide powder used in ink industry includes TiO2 rutile type and TiO2 anatase type.

Food Industry. Titanium dioxide in food can be used as all food white pigments, the maximum usage is 1g/kg.

Ink Industry

Rubber IndustryAdd titanium dioxide powder to white and colored rubber products. Under sunlight, it is resistant to sunlight, does not crack, does not change color, and has high elongation and acid and alkali resistance. Titanium dioxide TiO2 for rubber is mainly used in automobile tires, rubber shoes, rubber flooring, gloves, sports equipment, etc., and is generally dominated by anatase titanium dioxide. However, when used in the production of automobile tires, we often add a certain amount of rutile titanium dioxide to enhance its anti-ozone and anti-ultraviolet capabilities.

Cosmetics Industry

Because titanium dioxide is non-toxic and far superior to lead white, almost all kinds of face powders use titanium dioxide to replace lead white and zinc white. Just add 5-8% titanium dioxide to the powder to get permanent white, make the fragrance more creamy, with adhesion, absorption and covering power. Titanium dioxide in cosmetics can reduce the feeling of greasy and transparent in gouache and cold cream. Titanium dioxide is also often used in various other fragrances, sunscreens, soap flakes, white soaps, shaving creams and toothpaste.

Textile and Chemical Fiber Industry

Titanium dioxide for chemical fiber is mainly used as a matting agent. Because anatase titanium dioxide is softer than titanium dioxide rutile, titanium dioxide anatase is generally used. It does not need surface treatment, but some special varieties need surface treatment in order to reduce the photochemical effect of titanium dioxide and avoid fiber degradation under the action of titanium dioxide photocatalysis.
